VoIP is greener, as well as cheaper

Everyone hears a lot about the money that VoIP phone systems can save, but you typically don’t hear much about the technology’s green benefits.

BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, has an item on its blog that points out an interesting and highly green aspect of VoIP growth.

Quoting Jon Knight, of the British audio-visual integration company Smarter Interactive, the blog notes that the economic slowdown and the increasing speed of available broadband connections around the world, is making video-conferencing an ideal way to save money and reduce energy usage.

As a result, Knight says, video-conferencing is growing at a phenomenal rate.

In his own country, that growth is especially likely to continue.

The United Kingdom is spending more than $500,000 Euros to make its broadband network the fastest in Europe by 2015.

Is the end of metered cellphone calls near?

The release, titled “Qualcomm Chipset Powers First Successful VoIP-over-LTE Call with Single Radio Voice Call Continuity,” represents a breakthrough of near-epic proportions, according to Voxilla.com.

The Voxilla article suggests that the subject of the Qualcomm press release (the MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 chip, which the company plans to introduce at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month), provides the technical ability for mobile carriers to fully benefit from VoIP networks.

The new chip does this, Voxilla wryly says, “Not a $0.45 minute too soon.”

VoIP grows at other end of the alphabet–Wales & Zimbabwe

Telepliant.com reports that Wales is looking to provide next-generation broadband to increase VoIP telecommunications and advance the country’s technology infrastructure.

Comments are being sought from the business community over the Welsh government’s plan, which aims to give superfast connection rates to the entire country by 2015.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the world, Zimbabwe’s Econet Wireless has announced plans to launch VoIP service.

Analysts had suspected that GSM mobile operators in the African nation were afraid to offer VoIP.

But, according to Technology Zimbabwe’s website, Econet, the country’s largest telcom, plans to offer VoIP service before the end of this month.

“This has come as a surprise and we’re quite curious and excited to see what exactly Econet will unveil tomorrow,” the site’s report says, adding that sources indicate that the company will allow subscribers to use regular cell phones with the service (though it was uncertain how they would do that).
