1. What is SIP?
SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol,
which is a standard for making phone calls over the internet (VOIP).
To make phone calls over the internet, you do not
need any telephony hardware, all you need is a SIP softphone. A
softphone is just a piece of software with a telephone-like user
interface. There are many free SIP soft phones (such as X-lite)
available on the Internet.
When SIP is used for Voicent software, each line is
started as a SIP soft phone. So as long as you can use a softphone
to make a phone call, you should be able to use Voicent software.
2. Can I call landline or
cell phones using SIP?
Yes, but you need 1) a VOIP service that offers
SIP termination (link calls from VOIP to landline or cell
phone), or 2) a SIP compatible PBX system. Either one provides
a bridge between the VOIP network and the traditional phone network
(PSTN).
When a call is make from a softphone (or Voicent
software), the call is first made to your SIP termination service
provider or SIP Compatible PBX system, which in turn calls the
landline phone; once connected, the SIP softphone is connected to
the landline phone.
3. Call landline phone or
cell phone call my SIP softphone/device?
Yes, but you must have:
1. a DID number (DID stands for Direct Inward
Dialing Number). Some VOIP/SIP service providers include DID number.
You can also find company offer free DID service; or
2. a SIP Capable PBX system
4. Can Voicent make
simultaneous phone calls with SIP?
Yes. You can use one SIP account for multiple lines
if your SIP provider supports multiple channels; or use different
SIP account for different line.
5. Where can I find SIP
service providers? Can you recommend one?
Please search Google for "SIP Termination", "SIP Trunking",
or "SIP
service". You can find plenty of them online.
We currently do not have a recommended SIP service provider since
the SIP capability is just added in release 7. Once we have more
customer feedback, we'll publish the list here.
For now, look for VOIP/SIP service provider that provides at least:
1. SIP Termination (to call regular landline or cell phone)
2. Support multiple channel for one SIP account. In order to support
call transfer to a regular phone, you need one channel for outbound
call, and another channel to the transferred number.
Examples of SIP service: rapidvox, callcentral, callwithus, Gradwell,
DiamondCard, RingCentral.
If you have trouble setting up your VOIP service with Voicent, we can help
you test it. Simply send your account information to support @ voicent
. com. After we test it, we'll let you know the correct SIP settings
and you can then change your account password.
6. How do I configure
Voicent for using SIP?
Please see: Voicent and SIP.
7. How do I specify phone
numbers to call?
For regular telephone numbers, specify the full 11 digit
number including the area code and country code. For example,
1 408-725-7578, where 1 is the country code used by Skype
for US phone numbers. You could ignore the country code 1 and
specify 10 digit number (408-725-7578) when the dialing
rule on Voicent Gateway is set to add 1 to 10 digit number.
(Gateway > Setup > Option > Outbound).
For SIP user, use the prefix sip: followed by the
SIP user ID. For example, sip:myaccount@mysipprovider.com.
Please replace myaccount and mysipprovider with
the correct value.
8. How many lines can I have
on one PC using SIP?
You can have as many lines as your computer allows. The
more CPU power and more internet bandwidth you have, the more
lines your computer can support. Please see
Hardware Requirements when using SIP.
9. What's the difference
between SIP and Skype?
Both are VOIP services. SIP is an industry standard and has
many providers. Skype used proprietary technology and is a
closed system. Skype is in the process to support SIP also.
10. How do I setup my SIP
Caller ID display?
Maybe. This depends on your VOIP service provider.
11. Can I record by phone
using SIP?
Yes. Just follow the Record by Phone steps, and call in
using a SIP softphone. If you have a DID service, you can call
in using a regular landline phone or cell phone.
