Small businesses moving to VoIP phones

VoIP phones systems are proving to be irresistible to small business, according to a blog article published by TMCnet.

Small businesses across the U.S. are moving to VoIP systems to take advantage of broadband connections for voice calls, according to the article, which was written by TMCnet contributor Calvin Azuri.

Calls, in particular long distance calls, cost less over the VoIP system, Azuri notes, adding that hosted VoIP systems have the added benefit of not requiring on-site IT staff to administer and maintain them.

Fast-growing VoIP is “on brink of ubiquity”

A blog post by TMCnet Contributing Editor David Sims points to an InformationWeek article describing VoIP growth as “exploding” and “on the brink of ubiquity.

The incredible growth is being fueled by both consumer apps and enterprise-targeted services, InformationWeek reported.

Sims notes that “already Skype is available across almost every conceivable platform and device …  I easily can imagine a future where Google and its abundant fiber become the de facto telecom company.”

A wave of recent VoIP announcements focused on pricing indicates that VoIP is moving beyond early adopters and and into the mainstream, Sims wrote.

Popular VoIP service is down nationwide

Techcrunch.com is reporting that Ooma, the popular VoIP service, is having serious network problems and is currently completely offline.

According to Techcrunch: “Some users (mostly in California) are reporting that their service is returning, but right now, it would appear that a majority of subscribers are unable to make or receive phone calls. Another outage similar in scale to this one occurred in 2009, with service remaining offline for nearly 6 hours.”

Customers who attempted to reach out to Ooma’s main office heard a recorded message stating that the office was closed, Techcrunch said, adding that Ooma’s office voice mailbox was filled.
