The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) raided and seized equipment from operators of three illegal VoIP gateways being operated in and near the town of Multan, according to The Nation newspaper.
According to reports from the PTA, teams traced the exact locations and carried out the raids. One person running the set up was also apprehended during the raid.
In a statement, the PTA said the raid was the product of continuous monitoring and shows the commitment PTA has in curbing the so-called “grey-traffic.” The confiscated equipment included gateways, Tellulars, Switches, Routers and a number of SIMs of different operators.
The raids resulted in blocking more than 60,000 mobile SIMs along with IMEIs, the PTA said. The agency noted that a state-of-the-art monitoring facility is observing the international traffic coming in to the country, aiming to identify the illegal gateway exchanges.
The PTA reportedly loses nearly $50 million to illegal VoIP gateways. Many in the international community, however, have said the nation should drop the laws against VoIP gateways because it would benefit the national economy.
