VoIP as investment security?

The fear for many African businesses is that the phone system they purchase won’t turn out to be an abandoned “closed” system that can’t be upgraded.

According to an article in Africa IT News, VoIP systems are being viewed as ‘investment protection’ for their telephony systems.

“These are highly valid considerations,”  Rob Lith, Director of Connection Telecom, is quoted in the article, adding “and quite frankly, they’re the result of two things – the opaque business practices prevalent in the bad old days of monolithic telcos, and the non-standard technology of the powerful ‘legacy’ tech vendors of yesteryear.”

According to the article, many of the old-fashioned phone companies in Africa started building in closed-system engineering in response to VoIP technology.

This enables the companies to raise costs because of the specialized knowledge needed to manage such systems, according to the article.

VoIP by media tablet about to soar?

While PC shipments world-wide grew at a much slower 2.9 percent pace, shipments for media tablets such as Apple’s iPad2, increased by nearly 90 percent last quarter, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).

That suggests that the number of consumers using VoIP hardware on their media tablets may soon soar.

The IDC said media tablet shipping rose by 88.9 per cent last quarter and increased more than 300 percent when compared to 2010 figures.

CloudTC phone gets new VoIP platform

The technology companies 2600hz and CloudTC have announced the integration of Whistle, the distributed scalable VoIP platform, with the CloudTC Glass 1000 IP phone.

The combination offers enterprise users enhanced business productivity apps, such as teleconferencing and call transcription, alongside advanced telephony features, such as one-touch dialing and instant screen sharing. The two companies demonstrated their new product at last week’s ITEXPO West in Austin, Texas.

Based in San Francisco, 2600hz is now an authorized distributor of CloudTC Glass smart IP phones, and will begin offering this integrated solution through a beta program to its VoIP carrier customers.

“We are excited to partner with CloudTC and enable business customers to deploy a hosted VoIP solution faster while spending less time managing infrastructure,” said 2600hz CEO and co-founder Darren Schreiber. “Whistle and Glass make an unbeatable combination.”

Whistle is a carrier-grade, distributed VoIP applications platform that provides the security and scalability of a hosted solution for organizations ranging from small businesses to the largest enterprises, according to a news release issued by the two companies.

The CloudTC Glass 1000 incorporates the benefits of the Android operating system, combining voice calls with advanced productivity features. VoIP software providers like 2600hz have embraced Glass because of its benefits of requiring less time to market, lower investment in R&D, and the ability to customize phone features and application suites for business users.
