VoIP service provider Ooma’s 3-hour service outage was caused by a power failure and then worsened by what appeared to be a Denial of Service Attack but was actually just a massive number of visits to Ooma’s website by concerned customers.
The company said a “rare” power failure at its datacenter provider started the trouble. Then, what appeared as a coordinated DDOS attack proved to simply be a wave of visitors looking for website information about the outage.
The nationwide service outage began early Thursday morning and lasted about three hours.
The company said the service was restored by the time most West Coast customers arrived at work, according to the company’s corporate blog.
