Call forwarding and call transfer

I am having a real problem with call transfer. I have call transfer with my phone co. I have gone into the gateway, under options and set it. the phone co told me that to use call transfer, i should enter *72. So that is what i have under prefix. for suffix, i have 928 (thats my area code) and the 7 digit phone number is under “default phone numbers to transfer to. what am i doing wrong? how can i fix this?

It looks like you are using the call forwarding feature instead of the call transfer feature.

Here is how call forwarding works:

If a phone has call forwarding setup, such as busy call forwarding, then an incoming call will be forwarded to another phone whenever the current phone line is busy. So if you set your home phone
to busy call forward to your cell phone, and someone calls your home and the line is busy, you cell phone will ring. There are other types of call forwarding too, such as delayed call forwarding. You can check your phone company’s website for more details.

For call transfer, the usage is completely different. Here is a typical sequence:

1. You make a phone call to A
2. A wants to take to B
3. You transfer the call to B by entering a fix key sequence set by your phone company. For example, if you are using Vonage, you can press the Flash key, followed by #90, followed by B’s 11 digit phone number, then followed by #.
4. Now the call is transfered and A and B are talking
5. You are disconnected from the A and B. You phone line is free to make another phone call

Some phone companies do not offer call transfer service for certain areas. But usually they offer 3-way calling. The sequence of 3-way calling is almost the same as call transfer except the last step 5, in which case you are still connected to A and B. So the three of you are in a conference.

You cannot use call forwarding to set up Voicent call transfer

As you can see, call forwarding has completely different usage. It cannot be used with Voicent Gateway for call transfer purposes.

Failed to start Voicent Gateway when using Windows RDP

I am trying to get your demo software to run (BroadcastByPhone) but I cannot get the Voicent Gateway to work to test it out. Here is what I’ve done:

I’ve tried following the troubleshooting suggestions (there is no icon present for the Voicent Gateway on the task bar). I also don’t have any logs to send to you.

I have installed a Voicent 3025 voice modem and it works fine (I tested it using dialer.exe to call my phone).

I’ve run “net start VoicentGateway” from a command prompt and I get a message that the service is already running

I’ve checked the services and the Voicent Gateway service is running. I’ve restarted it with no difference.

I’ve re-installed the Voicent Gateway software to C:\Voicent\Gateway (previously C:\Program Files\Voicent\Gateway)

The software is installed on a machine running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (of which I am the administrator). I see no mention of any server OS’s in the list of software requirements, so I suspect this may be the problem, so I figured I’d check with you to make sure, and if you have any other suggestions.

Window 2003 server should be fine. We have many customers using it.

One problem is sometime related to the folder C:\Program Files. There is file permission issue if you have reinstalled the OS. You might want to reinstall the software to a different folder, say C:\Voicent

Ok, I’ve uninstalled all the voicent software and reinstalled it to C:\Voicent, but the Voicent Gateway still isn’t working. This is the message I’m getting:

“Checking Voicent Gateway on this computer :Connection FAILED”

And I still don’t get the Gateway icon in the task bar. I’ve also tried starting the Gateway using vgate.exe (found in C:\Voicent\Gateway\bin\) and I get the following error message:
“The service process could not connect to the service controller”

The vgate.exe is a Windows service process, it can only be launch by Windows OS, or through the Windows Service panel.

Still don’t have any log files under C:\Voicent\Gateway\logs ?

There are two log files (ragent.log and service.log) but both are empty.

That means it is not related to the file permission. It does produce log files. Any restriction on Windows service process to launch another regular process? Any message in Event Viewer?

Here is the error in the Event Viewer

“The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( VoicentGateway ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: VoicentGateway error: StartServiceCtrlDispatcher failed.”

I am using Remote Desktop to work on this computer.

That explains the problem.

It is actually a Windows RDP limitation. It does not have a “Desktop” to launch an app with GUI or icon.

You have to install the software and start the computer from the console. Once started, you can use windows RDP to access it. Or use Voicent Remote access to access the gateway.

Broadcast by Phone autodialer command line options

I am looking to purchase Broadcast By Phone professional version and I need to know more about the command line interface. Can you email me the documentation that shows the features available. I saw the sample command line on your web site, but I get the sense it does not show all the features. I have not yet purchased your modem card, so i don’t think the demo version will help me answer the questions I have… I was hoping to be able to use text to voice from the command line.. or as an alternative to be able to send multiple wav files from the command line… can these be done? If so, please email me a link, or a manual that explains all the command line options…

The autodialer command line option is a complete list of all available command line options. And you should be able to test all of them using the shareware edition.

If you have pre-recorded audio files or fixed text-to-speech text, you can use them in a customized message. Just use the graphical Message Designer to design your message, select that message for your call list, and save the call list file. You can then use the command line to launch the broadcast for that call list. The broadcast will use your customized message.

For dynamically generated audio files or text, the Broadcast by Phone command line interface is not going to work. You have to go with the lower level interface provided by Voicent Gateway. For tutorial and samples, please see developer section on our website.
